Staffordshire County Council's 'Zero Waste to Landfill by 2020' is completely misleading. It claims that by 2020 of Staffordshire's 700,000 tonnes of waste, 350,000 tonnes of waste will be recycled or composted, and 350,000 tonnes will be incinerated, hence zero left to go to landfill.
In reality burning 350,000 tonnes of waste will produce over 80,000 tonnes of bottom ash which needs to be disposed of, and more than 10,000 tonnes of toxic fly ash, which will have to be landfilled at a special hazardous waste site.
Another 150,000 tonnes of other peoples waste will also be burnt in Staffordshire producing a further 37,500 tonnes of bottom ash and 4,500 tonnes of fly ash.
All the bottom ash from the Hanford incinerator is sent to landfill.
In total the two incinerators would be producing more than 130,000 tonnes of ash to be landfilled.
